Institute of Sound and Music (Berlin)

The ISM needed a website that not only showcased its ambitious projects but also helped secure its future. Beyond informing visitors about its groundbreaking installations, the site needed to drive engagement with events and merchandise - key revenue streams supporting ISM’s mission to establish a permanent museum for immersive sound, art, and music.

Role

I led discovery and definition workshops to refine ISM’s messaging and align it with their long-term vision. From there, I developed wireframes and UI designs that structured the site around clear storytelling, user engagement, and a seamless event experience.

Challenge

The biggest challenge was crafting a digital presence that effectively communicated ISM’s dual purpose: celebrating cutting-edge sound art while fundraising for a permanent home. The site needed to highlight key events like the touring Hexadome installation, provide clear donation pathways, and frame merchandise - such as the Hexadome vinyl compilation—not just as products, but as contributions to the cause.

Process

Through workshops, I identified ISM’s core audiences and their motivations, mapping out critical user journeys that balanced information, engagement, and conversion. Using these insights, I designed wireframes that streamlined event discovery, donation prompts, and storytelling before transitioning into a visually immersive UI design that reflected ISM’s artistic identity.

Solution

The final website was structured around three pillars: showcasing installations like the Hexadome, highlighting ISM’s community of artists and members, and driving support through event attendance and merchandise purchases framed as donations. A dynamic event system kept users informed of upcoming installations, while an intuitive design encouraged deeper exploration of ISM’s mission and fundraising efforts.

Outcome and impact

The refined structure made it easier for visitors to engage with ISM’s events and understand the significance of their support. The site successfully positioned ticket sales and merch as contributions to a larger cause, reinforcing ISM’s vision for a permanent space. Increased event attendance and merchandise engagement directly contributed to fundraising efforts.

Takeaways

This project highlighted the power of UX in aligning storytelling with business objectives. By shifting the perception of ISM’s offerings from simple transactions to meaningful contributions, the site became a key tool in their long-term fundraising strategy.
